Ho Chi Minh City is one of Southeast Asia's most food-dense cities — every alley, every pavement corner has something cooking. A typical budget for Ho Chi Minh City street food is VND 100,000–200,000(約HKD 30–60)per full meal, which means you can eat four proper meals on HKD 100 without even trying. The best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City is November to March, when humidity drops and you can actually stand outside queuing for bánh mì without sweating through your outfit。

Ho Chi Minh City is synonymous with bánh mì,

Bánh Mì Hùynh Hoa(地址:26 Lê Thị Riêng, District 1,近Ben Thành市場,步行約8分鐘)係遊客榜單常客,一個VND 50,000–65,000(約HKD 15–20),份量巨大,豬肉、豬肝醬、火腿疊晒。 Google Maps

但如果你想食本地早晨版本——唔係呢種「加料豪華版」——去Bánh Mì Bà Lan(District 3,Võ Văn Tần街附近,VND 25,000,約HKD 8)。

cà phê sữa đá(凍奶咖啡)VND 25,000–35,000(約HKD 8–11)。

Google Maps

搵Bún Thịt Nướng Cô Bảy(地址:Đinh Tiên Hoàng, District 1附近,Google Maps搜尋名稱),開門時間:下午3時至夜晚10時。

How much does street food cost in Ho Chi Minh City?

A full meal of street food in Ho Chi Minh City costs VND 50,000–90,000 (approximately HKD 15–27). A bowl of phở runs VND 60,000–95,000 (HKD 18–29), bánh mì costs VND 25,000–65,000 (HKD 8–20) depending on the vendor, and a local beer is as low as VND 10,000–15,000 (HKD 3–5). You can eat four full meals in one day for under HKD 100 if you stick to local-facing streets and avoid tourist-priced areas like Bùi Viện.

What is the best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City?

The best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City is November to April — this is the dry season, with lower humidity and no heavy rain. December and January are peak months with the most comfortable temperatures (around 25–30°C). May to October is rainy season; afternoon downpours happen almost daily, which can disrupt outdoor eating. That said, even in rainy season, mornings are usually fine and food stalls stay open rain or shine.

Is Ho Chi Minh City safe for solo female travellers?

Ho Chi Minh City is generally safe for solo female travellers. The main risks are bag snatching from motorbikes (keep bags on your inner side, away from the road) and scam taxis — always use Grab app instead of flagging taxis on the street. Street food areas are busy and well-lit at night, and the local culture is non-confrontational. Standard urban awareness applies: stay in populated areas, don't flash expensive gear, and trust your instincts.

Do I need cash in Ho Chi Minh City or can I use a credit card?

You need cash (Vietnamese Dong, VND) for street food, local markets, and most small restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City. Cards are accepted at malls, international hotels, and some sit-down restaurants. The best exchange rate is at gold shops (tiệm vàng) in the city, not at the airport. Withdraw from ATMs using a Wise or Revolut card to minimise fees. USD also works at some vendors but you'll get worse rates.

How do I get around Ho Chi Minh City without getting ripped off?

Use the Grab app for all transport — it shows a fixed price before you confirm, so there's no bargaining or meter tricks. A Grab Car ride within District 1 costs VND 25,000–50,000 (HKD 8–15). Grab Bike is cheaper and faster in traffic. Do not take unmarked taxis or accept rides from drivers who approach you first at the airport or tourist spots.

What Vietnamese dishes should I eat in Ho Chi Minh City that I can't find easily in Hong Kong?

Bún bò Huế (spicy Hue-style beef noodle soup), bún thịt nướng (cold noodles with grilled pork and fried spring roll pieces), bánh tráng trộn (mixed rice paper salad), and cơm tấm (broken rice with grilled pork and egg) are all dishes that are either unavailable or significantly different in Hong Kong. Cơm tấm is particularly worth seeking out — it's a specifically Saigonese dish with a distinct smoky flavour that doesn't travel well.
